Description
UV radiation emits from both natural sources like sunlight, and artificial ones like lasers and tanning beds. UV rays are categorised based on their wavelength: UVA (longest), UVB (medium), and UVC (shortest). About 95% of UV rays that reach the Earth’s surface are UVA, which penetrates deeper into the skin, causing premature ageing. The remaining 5% is UVB, which tends to affect the skin’s outer layer, leading to sunburn.
Ultraviolet Index (UVI)
The UVI is a global scale ranging from 0 to 11+ that measures the intensity of solar UV radiation. Singapore, being close to the equator, typically experiences UVI between 6 to 9 throughout the day.
